The actor's director, mislabeled

Cukor spent his career fighting a compliment. The "woman's director" tag — pinned on him for the performances he pulled from Hepburn, Garbo and Judy Holliday — was meant as praise and functioned as a cage, because it implied he could do one thing. The record refutes it from the other side: he directed more actors to the Best Actor Oscar than anyone, James Stewart in The Philadelphia Story (1940), Ronald Colman in A Double Life (1947), Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady (1964). What he actually was is simpler and larger than the label — a director of performance, full stop, indifferent to whether the face on screen belonged to a man or a woman.

Theatre to the Selznick machine

Born in New York City on July 7, 1899, Cukor came to film sideways, through the stage — years of summer stock and Broadway direction before Hollywood signed him at the end of the 1920s. A clash with Ernst Lubitsch over One Hour with You (1932) sent him into the orbit of producer David O. Selznick, whom he followed from RKO to MGM in 1933. The literary-adaptation run that made his name followed fast: Dinner at Eight (1933), David Copperfield (1935), Romeo and Juliet (1936), Camille (1936). Then the famous wound — hired to direct Gone with the Wind (1939), he spent two years in preparation and was removed within weeks of shooting, kept on only to coach its actresses in secret. He kept working for another four decades, to Travels with My Aunt (1972) and beyond, but the Oscar he had been nominated for four times only arrived, late, for My Fair Lady.

What the numbers say

Our library ranks Cukor #30 among all directors at a composite 17.25 across 23 films — respectable, and lower than his contemporaries might expect. The shape tells the story. Gone with the Wind is his peak at #75 (3.68) — though that film is a scoring artifact worth flagging, since the credit that made it famous went to his replacement, not to him — and My Fair Lady sits at #193 (2.76). After those two the curve drops off a cliff: The Philadelphia Story at #448, Gaslight (1944) and Born Yesterday (1950) clustered near #1415, Camille down at #2951, The Women (1939) at #3017. Compare William Wyler, the other great studio craftsman, at #10: the auteurist canon that punished Wyler for reliability punished Cukor harder, and to my eye the tail here is genuinely underrated — Camille and Adam's Rib (1949) are better than four-figure ranks admit.
