The Best Neo-Noir Movies
Noir after noir: the neo-noir canon — Chinatown to Fargo to Mulholland Drive — ranked by our composite score across 20+ lists.
Neo-noir is what happened when directors who grew up on 1940s film noir got the keys and color film: Polanski's Chinatown rebuilt the private-eye picture as a story about unpunishable evil, Taxi Driver poured noir fatalism into New Hollywood, and Blade Runner exported the style to the future. The Coen brothers have spent a career inside the form (Blood Simple to No Country for Old Men), and Lynch's Mulholland Drive dissolved it into dream — proof the shadow style outlived its studio era by half a century.
Taxi Driver (1976) leads with a composite score of 6.25. Top 100 of 122 films in our library.

The list above is ordered by composite score, so its shape is an argument in itself: which revivals of noir have actually accumulated canonical weight, and which merely carry the tag. Read the top as the settled canon and the tail as the style's honest reach across languages and decades.
The revival, in color
Neo-noir is what the shadow style became once its studio era ended. The classic American cycle ran from the early 1940s to the late 1950s; critics did not name the sequel until the 1970s, when the New Hollywood generation reopened noir with two things the old films never had — color stock and a torn-up Production Code. The fatalism survived intact; the constraints fell away. What returned could show the violence and sex the earlier cycle only implied, and it learned to fracture its own timeline rather than march through it. Roman Polanski's Chinatown (1974) and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976) are the usual openers; Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) proved the doomed-city grammar worked in the future tense.
What the score surfaces
The gap between reputation and score is the interesting part. Taxi Driver tops this page at #7 overall (score 6.25), with Pulp Fiction (1994) a step behind at #11 (5.76) — both rated well above the films the purists would call definitive. Chinatown, the film most viewers would name first, sits lower at #37 (4.33), and Blade Runner lower still at #236 (2.51): centrality to the story is not the same as accumulated weight, and our composite refuses to conflate them. The Coen brothers hold more of the list than anyone, from the debut Blood Simple (1984) at #907 up to No Country for Old Men (2007) at #50.
The tag's reach
Membership here comes from Wikidata's neo-noir subgenre tag, re-ranked by our score — which is why the sibling film noir page deliberately excludes this bucket, keeping the 1940s cycle and its color-era heirs on separate boards. The tag reaches wider than the American revival it is named for: it pulls in Akira Kurosawa's High and Low (1963) at #381 and François Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player (1960) at #493 — both predating the term — and stretches forward to Diao Yinan's Black Coal, Thin Ice (2014) at #1203, a Chinese entry proving the style went fully global. The score, not the sort order, is what we vouch for.
