The Best Coming-of-Age Movies
Growing up on screen: the coming-of-age canon ranked by our composite score across 20+ authoritative lists, awards and polls.
The coming-of-age film is world cinema's shared language — every national canon has one at its heart: Truffaut's The 400 Blows launched the French New Wave with a boy's flight to the sea, Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali did the same for India, and Louis Malle, Mike Nichols and George Lucas each fixed a generation's adolescence on film. The modern line runs through Linklater's twelve-year experiment Boyhood and Moonlight's triptych — the sub-genre where cinema's time-capturing power is most literal.
Spirited Away (2001) leads with a composite score of 4.98. Top 100 of 167 films in our library.

The coming-of-age film is the direct screen heir of the bildungsroman — the German "novel of formation" traced to Goethe, whose subject is a young protagonist's moral and psychological growth toward adulthood. It translates almost frictionlessly into cinema, and the list below ranks that translation by composite score. Because the score, not reputation, sets the order, the films at the top are not the ones a critic would name first.
What the composite rewards
The highest entry here is Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (2001) at #22 — with Princess Mononoke (1997) further down at #399, both stories of a child forced into an adult reckoning. Close behind come the titles the sub-genre is usually argued over: Barry Jenkins's Moonlight (2016) at #53, its three-act portrait of a boy becoming a man; Mike Nichols's The Graduate (1967) at #64; and Richard Linklater's Boyhood (2014) at #76, filmed across twelve years so that growing up is not performed but recorded — the one case where the genre's time-capturing ambition is literal. Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire (2008) — a quiz-show frame wrapped around a Mumbai childhood — sits at #214, score 2.65: awards weight alone, the composite suggests, no longer outranks the genre's core canon.
The bildungsroman goes global
No national cinema lacks its own version, and the list bears that out. Satyajit Ray appears twice — Pather Panchali (1955) at #81 and Aparajito (1956) at #546. Louis Malle's wartime Au revoir les enfants (1987) lands at #250; Emir Kusturica's When Father Was Away on Business (1985) at #361; and the Italian memory-films — Federico Fellini's Amarcord (1973) at #246 and Cinema Paradiso (1988) at #528 — sit beside Alfonso Cuarón's Y tu mamá también (2001) at #392. The American adolescence is well represented too: Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show (1971) at #112, George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973) at #374, and Rebel Without a Cause (1955) at #510.
How to read our list
Membership is drawn from Wikidata's coming-of-age genre tag, then re-ranked by our composite — so the tag, not our judgment, decides who enters. That reach runs both ways. It pulls in guests the label would not obviously claim: Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) at #85 and Forrest Gump (1994) at #100 both carry the tag. And it drops films the genre plainly owns — The 400 Blows, named in this page's own introduction as the sub-genre's founding text, does not carry the tag and so never appears below. Read the top as the canon the data ratifies and the tail as the tag's honest, imperfect reach; the number we vouch for is the score, not the sort.
