The Best Adventure Movies of All Time
Quests, expeditions and swashbucklers: the adventure canon ranked by our composite score across 20+ lists, awards and polls.
Adventure is the genre of the journey out — the swashbucklers of Fairbanks and Flynn, the imperial-twilight epics of David Lean, and the map-and-fedora serials Spielberg distilled into Raiders of the Lost Ark. Its modern canon belongs to the world-builders: Herzog dragging a steamship over a mountain, Peter Jackson's Middle-earth trilogy, and Miyazaki's flying machines — films whose scale is the argument.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) leads with a composite score of 7.43. Top 100 of 267 films in our library.

Adventure is the genre criticism kept forgetting and audiences never did. The standard histories concede it has rarely been treated as authored cinema — spectacle, not signature — and yet any honest ranking of the best adventure movies ends up crowded with auteurs. Our list is topped by 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), the library's #3 film overall, with Lawrence of Arabia (1962) — itself the library's #4 — right behind. The journey out — toward the desert, the jungle, the mountain, the treasure — turns out to be one of the things cinema was built to do.
From swashbuckler to effects age
The genre's first golden age belonged to the swashbucklers. Douglas Fairbanks turned Robin Hood (1922) into pure spectacle at a then-enormous cost of $1.5 million; a decade on, Warner Bros. rebuilt the formula around Errol Flynn in Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) — both on this list, both directed by Michael Curtiz. Alongside them ran the jungle cycle that King Kong (1933) expanded, and the location-shot imperial adventure typified by King Solomon's Mines (1950). The genre stayed a Hollywood staple until the mid-1950s, then returned transformed: Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) inaugurated the effects-driven era whose franchises, Middle-earth above all, still dominate the multiplex.
The auteurs the genre wasn't supposed to have
For a form supposedly without authors, the top of this page reads like a directors' pantheon. David Lean made the imperial-twilight epic the genre's prestige wing. Werner Herzog turned the expedition film into ordeal cinema — Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982), the one where he really did drag a steamship over a mountain. Peter Jackson landed all three Middle-earth films here, with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) the trilogy's highest at #73 in the library. And the modern blockbuster's founding pair, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, both appear — Jaws (1975) and Star Wars among the films that rewired the industry.
How to read our list
The ranking is by composite score across the lists, awards and polls we track — never by any single outlet's order. Membership is carried by genre tags inherited from each film's structured source data, mapped into our canonical adventure bucket, and that net is wider than a video-store shelf: Taxi Driver (1976) at #7 and No Country for Old Men (2007) at #50 carry the tag upstream, and read here as reminders that the genre's core is the dangerous journey, not the treasure map. The prestige skew is real — The Third Man (1949) and Apocalypse Now (1979) sit in the library's top ten, The Wages of Fear (1953) in its top 80 — so treat this page as the canon-weighted view of adventure: the films the whole critical apparatus, despite its old snobbery about the genre, could not keep off its lists.
