The Best Biopics of All Time
Lives turned into cinema: the biographical-film canon ranked by our composite score across 20+ authoritative lists, awards and polls.
The biopic is the genre awards love most — Lawrence of Arabia, Gandhi, Amadeus, Schindler's List and Oppenheimer all rode true lives to Best Picture — but its canon is broader than prestige: Scorsese's Raging Bull turned biography into expressionist boxing, Miloš Forman specialized in unmanageable geniuses, and the form's test has always been whether the film finds a shape in the life rather than a highlight reel. This page ranks every biographical film in our library by composite canon score.
Citizen Kane (1941) leads with a composite score of 9.21. Top 100 of 352 films in our library.

No genre converts real lives into prestige more reliably. Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Gandhi (1982), Amadeus (1984), Schindler's List (1993) and Oppenheimer (2023) all rode true stories to Best Picture, and any search for the best biopics ever made ends up doubling as a tour of Oscar history. This page is the data's version of that search: every film in our library carrying the biography tag, ranked by composite canon score — and the result is both more predictable and much stranger than the awards-season stereotype suggests.
The prestige machine and its critics
By the strict definition, a biopic dramatizes the life of a real person under that person's real name — where the historical drama borrows an era, the biopic borrows a self. Scholars have argued over its health for decades: George F. Custen pronounced the genre dead with the Hollywood studio era, and Dennis Bingham's 2010 study answered that it had merely codified into a durable contemporary form. Bingham's less comfortable finding — that male biopics tend to organize themselves around accomplishment while female biopics organize themselves around victimization — still reads like a caption for most awards seasons. Roger Ebert supplied the standard defense of the form's liberties with fact: biopics, he argued, are parables rather than documentaries. That defense names the real test, which was never accuracy. A great biopic finds a shape in the life; a bad one finds a highlight reel.
Key figures
The list's upper reaches belong to the British epic and to New Hollywood's revision of it. David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia is the highest-ranked biographical film in the library, and it earns the spot by doing what the genre almost never risks: withholding its subject, letting the desert keep asking who Lawrence actually was. Martin Scorsese places six films on this page — more than any other director — and his Raging Bull (1980) is the genre's great formal rebuke, biography turned into expressionist boxing, with Goodfellas (1990) close behind in the list's top five. Miloš Forman made the unmanageable genius his specialty, from Amadeus to The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996); Fred Zinnemann lands three films here — The Nun's Story (1959), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Julia (1977) — a quiet case for craft over spectacle. And Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer proved the form's commercial ceiling is still rising: it overtook Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) as the highest-grossing biopic ever made.
How to read our list
Membership here is decided by data, not by our taste: a film qualifies when the genre labels attached to it in Wikidata map into our biography bucket, and the order — like every list on this site — is purely the composite score built from the lists, awards and polls we aggregate. That honesty has consequences. Purists may object to Citizen Kane (1941) sitting second, and they would have a case; we have chosen to report the tags rather than curate them. The same net catches the genre's full range, from The Great Ziegfeld (1936) to Hamnet (2025), and it quietly corrects the biopic's Anglo-prestige reputation: Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev (1966) and The Mirror (1975) and Sergei Parajanov's The Color of Pomegranates (1969) are all here — biographical films that treat a life as a problem of form rather than a march of milestones, which is, by our lights, exactly what the best of this genre do.
