The Best Historical & Period Films
The past, reconstructed: the historical and period-film canon ranked by our composite score across 20+ lists, awards and polls.
The historical film is cinema doing what no other art can — walking a camera through a reconstructed past — and the canon rewards the reconstructions with a thesis: Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (empire as personal delusion), Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (the eighteenth century by candlelight), Visconti's The Leopard and Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (aristocracies watching themselves end). Its awards wing runs from Ben-Hur to Schindler's List to Oppenheimer; its art wing keeps proving the period picture is really about the year it was made.
The Godfather (1972) leads with a composite score of 9.75. Top 100 of 203 films in our library.

The historical film reconstructs a past it never saw — a dramatic work set in an earlier time, telling its events and its people with, as the standard definition allows, varying degrees of fiction. It is also the mode our data most cheerfully refuses to romanticize. Ask which reconstructions carry the most canonical weight, and the list answers not with marble and chariots but with a crime family: Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) leads the page outright at a score of 9.75, the highest here by a wide margin — a period picture most viewers never file as one.
The epic and the intimate
Two instincts split the mode. One builds outward, toward scale and spectacle. Ben-Hur (1959) and Gladiator (2000) hold the Roman end; Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987), our highest-scoring costume epic at 3.94, walks a whole dynasty to its close; Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954) supplies the template every siege picture since has borrowed. The other instinct turns inward, trusting one house or village to carry an era. Stanley Kubrick shot the eighteenth century by candlelight in Barry Lyndon (1975); Ingmar Bergman's Cries and Whispers (1972) and Fanny and Alexander (1982) rebuild their periods as chamber music; Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon (2009) reads a village on the eve of the First World War as the seedbed of the century's cruelty. The genre has been called conservative, glorifying a past that never existed — these are the films that indict it instead.
Not the biopic
The biographical film is, strictly, a branch of this same tree: a historical drama narrowed to a single named life. We keep the branches apart. The grandest life-and-era epics — Lawrence of Arabia among them — sit on the sibling best biopics page, where our data ranks that film second only to Citizen Kane. What the historical bucket keeps is the mode's other half: fiction moving through real time. So the invented gangsters crowd in while the tour-guide biographies migrate next door — The Godfather, Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990) at 6.33, and Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984) are historical fiction, not biography: real decades, imagined men.
How to read our list
Membership is decided by data, not taste. A film qualifies when the genre tags attached to it in Wikidata map into our historical bucket, and the order — as everywhere on this site — is purely the composite score aggregated from the lists, awards and polls we track. That honesty is why the page opens on gangsters rather than emperors, and why its wartime spine runs so high: Schindler's List (1993) at 6.12 and Roman Polanski's The Pianist (2002) at 3.86 sit in the page's front rank, and Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest (2023) arrives at 2.68 to argue the reconstruction can still find a form no one had tried. Read the top as the canon and the tail as the tag's honest reach; the score, not the sorting, is what we vouch for.
