The trial film is drama pre-staged: adversaries, rules, a verdict — cinema only has to add faces. Sidney Lumet's 12 Angry Men remains the form's textbook, Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder its procedural masterpiece, and Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg its moral summit; Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc proved the form was already complete in 1928. The modern canon runs from To Kill a Mockingbird's conscience to Anatomy of a Fall, where the trial dissects a marriage as much as a death.

Search demand calls them the best legal movies; critics call them courtroom dramas; either way the appeal is the same. The trial is the one story that arrives with its structure already built — two adversaries, fixed rules, a verdict withheld until the last reel — so the camera can spend all its attention on faces instead of plot. The American Film Institute thought the form coherent enough to rank its own courtroom top ten in 2008. Our list does the same thing by arithmetic rather than by taste.
What the tag collects
Membership here is not a hand-picked canon. Each film carries Wikidata genre tags; those tags map into a single courtroom bucket, and the bucket is then re-ranked by composite score — never by any outside list's order. Honesty is the upside, breadth the cost. A trial scene is enough to earn a place, so the page holds films no one files under "legal movies" first: Abbas Kiarostami's Close-Up (1990), a real fraud case restaged with its own defendant, scores 3.01; David Fincher's deposition-framed The Social Network (2010) sits at 2.68; even Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000), whose verdict is a musical's cruelty, rides in at 2.43. The formal military and religious trials — Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), at 2.62 — share the page with the American jury pictures, because the tag makes no distinction the histories insist on.
How to read our list
The gap between reputation and score is the whole story. Sidney Lumet's 12 Angry Men (1957) leads decisively at composite 5.25 — a film that never leaves the jury room, and the entry every account of the form starts from. Behind it, and only there, come Fred Zinnemann's A Man for All Seasons (1966) at 3.51 and the modern wave: Justine Triet's Anatomy of a Fall (2023) at 3.33, where the trial autopsies a marriage.
Then the drop is severe, and it falls on exactly the films the critics canonize. Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder (1959), routinely named the genre's finest procedural, scores 1.31. Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution (1957) sits lower still at 0.71. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), the form's conscience, holds 1.76; Stanley Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), its moral summit, 1.70; Lumet's own The Verdict (1982), 1.40. And far at the bottom, My Cousin Vinny (1992) at 0.14 — proof the tag keeps the comedy honest company with the tragedy. Read the top for the two or three titles the whole culture agrees on; read the long middle for the connoisseur's canon the numbers quietly discount.
