Suspense turned inward: the psychological-thriller canon ranked by our composite score across 20+ lists, awards and polls.

The psychological thriller relocates the danger inside the skull: Hitchcock owns the form's foundations — Vertigo, Psycho, Rear Window are all studies in watching and obsession before they are crime stories — and Polanski's apartment films, Coppola's The Conversation and Scorsese's Taxi Driver carried its paranoia through the 1970s. The recognised modern anchors sit lower but cluster tightly: David Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001) at #31, Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs (1991) at #49, one place ahead of No Country for Old Men (2007) at #50, and Coppola's The Conversation (1974) at #71. That a war epic and a vigilante character study outrank the films most people would name first is the whole point of ranking by measured standing instead of by genre reputation.
