The sealed room

Polanski is the hardest case in this library — a filmmaker whose art and biography have to be held in the same hand, because the films keep insisting on it. One subject recurs across six decades: a person sealed in a room or a role, watched, disbelieved, closing in on madness or violence. What matters is that he was making this before the murder of his wife and before the crime that turned him into a fugitive — the paranoia was a worldview first, not a wound, which is what keeps it art rather than autobiography. Few directors have ever controlled dread this precisely.

Ghetto to fugitive

Born in Paris on August 18, 1933, he was taken to Kraków as a child; when the war came his mother was deported to Auschwitz and killed, his father sent to Mauthausen, and Polanski escaped the ghetto in 1943 to survive among Polish Catholics. He graduated from the National Film School in Łódź in 1959 — the city later named him an honorary citizen — after the shorts Two Men and a Wardrobe (1958) and When Angels Fall (1959). Knife in the Water (1962), his first feature, drew an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and got him out of Poland. Britain produced Repulsion (1965) and Cul-de-sac (1966); Hollywood produced Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Chinatown (1974), the latter nominated for eleven Academy Awards. Then the biography overtook the filmography: the Manson family murdered his pregnant wife Sharon Tate on August 9, 1969, and in March 1977 he was arrested for the sexual assault of a thirteen-year-old girl, pleaded guilty, and fled the United States in January 1978 for France, where he remains a fugitive. He kept working — Tess (1979), The Pianist (2002) — and in 2018 the Academy expelled him.

What the numbers say

Our library ranks Polanski #35 among all directors, a composite 16.28 across 12 films — and the top of his list is a study in two kinds of acclaim. Chinatown, the film most critics would name his masterpiece, is both his most-cited title — 15 of our source lists carry it, more than any other Polanski film — and his highest-ranked, at #37 overall (4.33). Just beneath it sits The Pianist at #66 (3.86), a film that appears on only 9 lists but won him the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Director, accepted in absentia: one awards season's triumph, still outweighed in the aggregate by five decades of steady citation. Tess follows at #380, then the curve falls hard: Rosemary's Baby down at #694 despite seven citations, Repulsion at #2196, Knife in the Water at #2829.
