    Edgar Wright's 1,000 favorite movies

Swedish cinema is the improbable case of a small country that handed the medium two of its founding masters and then, a generation later, its single most analysed auteur — and the composite score above tells that second story almost to the exclusion of the first. Ingmar Bergman takes the top two places and a clear majority of the forty films below the fold, which is less a distortion than an accurate readout of how thoroughly one man's chamber dramas colonised the world's canons.

How the page is built

Membership runs off Wikidata's country-of-origin field, with historical and predecessor states folded in, re-ranked by our composite score rather than any external chart; fifty-nine films clear the bar. The instructive absence is at the front of the tradition rather than the front of the list. Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller built Swedish film on landscape and Lagerlöf — Sjöström's The Phantom Carriage (1921), Stiller's The Saga of Gösta Berling (1924), the picture that made Greta Garbo — a few years after Svensk Filmindustri consolidated the industry in 1919. Both men left for MGM in the mid-1920s, and the canonical weight that has accrued to sound cinema ever since leaves the upper ranks entirely to their heirs.

The Bergman gravity well

Wild Strawberries (1957) heads the list at score 4.30, Persona (1966) follows at 4.29, and the run does not let up: The Seventh Seal (1957), Fanny and Alexander (1982), Cries and Whispers (1972). Bergman won three Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film — The Virgin Spring (1960), Through a Glass Darkly (1961) and Fanny and Alexander — and drew a Best Picture nomination for Cries and Whispers, so the composite here mostly ratifies a reputation already ratified everywhere else. The telling entries are the ones that break the monopoly: Alf Sjöberg's Miss Julie (1951), the highest-ranked non-Bergman film on the page, and his Torment (1944), plus Bille August's The Best Intentions (1992) — evidence that the strongest Swedish cinema outside Bergman still tends to stand very close to him.

The deadpan and the humanists

The list's other pole is modern and dry. Roy Andersson stages A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014, score 1.11) and Songs from the Second Floor (2000) in fixed, ash-grey tableaux; Ruben Östlund turns social embarrassment into slow-motion cruelty in The Square (2017, score 1.73) and Force Majeure (2014), and has twice won the Palme d'Or (The Square; Triangle of Sadness, 2022). Between the poles sit the humanists — Jan Troell's emigration diptych The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972), Bo Widerberg's Ådalen 31 (1969), Lasse Hallström's My Life as a Dog (1985), Lukas Moodysson's Lilya 4-ever (2002) — the plain, unshowy feeling for which Sweden is otherwise known. Read top to bottom, the page argues one thing: a single titan, flanked by a silent prologue the canon has quietly demoted and a modern coda that answered his solemnity with a straight face.
