The service, as-is
History of Movies is a free reference site. It is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind — including accuracy, completeness or uninterrupted availability. We work hard to keep the data correct, but film records contain genuine ambiguities (release years, credits, retitlings), sources revise their own lists, and our pipeline can lag or err. Nothing here should be treated as an authoritative record; verify against primary sources where it matters.
Rankings and editorial stance
The composite scores and every ranking on this site are our own editorial selection and arrangement, computed by the disclosed methodology. Individual facts we cite — that a film won an award in a given year, or held a given position on a named published list — are facts and remain attributable to their original sources. We do not reproduce any third-party list in full; we cite individual placements and compute our own orderings.
No affiliation
This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of the organizations whose lists and awards it references — including the BFI and Sight & Sound, the American Film Institute, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals, Kinema Junpo, Cahiers du Cinéma, the Library of Congress, the Criterion Collection and Letterboxd. All names are used to identify the sources of cited facts.
Images and attribution
Poster and portrait imagery comes from Wikimedia Commons under the free license each file carries; the license and author are credited on the page where an image appears. The essays, page structure and generated artwork on this site are ours. You may quote from this site with attribution and a link.
