把「思考」拍成電影的導演
沒有任何導演比他更能說服電影:它可以出聲思考。羅傑·艾伯特(Roger Ebert)1969 年寫道,「1960 年代沒有任何導演對長片形式的發展有更大的影響」,而這個說法此後只變得更硬:跳接作為一種表達、引用作為一種風格、隨筆作為一種電影形式——此後每一位有自覺的導演,工具箱都通過高達。
從《電影筆記》到街壘
1930 年 12 月 3 日生於巴黎,出身富裕的法瑞新教家庭,大半在瑞士長大,高達是先以寫字的人身分走進電影的。1950 年他與艾力·侯麥、賈克·希維特合辦了短命的《Gazette du cinéma》,1952 年 1 月起在《電影筆記》上發表文章,磨利了日後成為法國新浪潮的那些論戰。《斷了氣》(Breathless,1960)——由製片喬治·德·博勒加(Georges de Beauregard) 依杜魯福的一個故事構想出資,由勞爾·庫塔(Raoul Coutard) 掌鏡,劇本一天一天現寫——引爆了新浪潮的風格家法;影評人理查·布洛迪(Richard Brody) 說得最好:在它之後,電影「以思考的速度行進」。接著是現代電影史上最密集的一段黃金期,其中大半有安娜·卡麗娜(Anna Karina) 在場:《隨心所欲》(My Life to Live,1962)、《輕蔑》(Contempt,1963)、《法外之徒》(Bande à part,1964)、《阿爾發城》(Alphaville) 與《狂人皮埃洛》(Pierrot le Fou)(皆 1965),以《週末》(Weekend,1967) 與片尾那張「電影終結」字卡收束整個十年——而他幾乎是認真的。他參與逼停 1968 年的坎城影展,直到 1973 年把自己溶解進馬克思主義的狄嘉·維托夫小組,再與陪伴他直到辭世的安娜-玛麗·米耶維爾一起,從錄像重新把電影蓋起來。晚期作品——紀念碑式的影像隨筆《Histoire(s) du cinéma》(1988–1998)、3D 的《告別語言》(Goodbye to Language,2014,坎城評審團獎)、《影像之書》(The Image Book,2018,獲頒特別金棕櫚獎)——讓他直到九十多歲仍站在前衛的最前線。2022 年 9 月 13 日,他在瑞士羅勒以協助自殺的方式離世,享年 91;一位家屬說他「並沒有生病,他只是累了」。
