每個電影文化中都有一位人物，與其說是作者，不如說是一個機構，而在戰後的日本，這個人物就是山田。當西方將黑澤明奉為日本電影的代表時，山田花了五十年的時間，做著某種更難以外銷的事：一位讓整個國家與之一起變老的導演。他執導了91部電影。其中48部由同一位四處流浪的小販主演。這在作者論的意義上並不算是一組作品——這是一段與觀眾之間連載式的關係，其持續時間比電影史上任何可比擬的系列都還要長。
從大連到松竹
他於1931年9月13日出生於豐中，主要在被佔領的中國大連長大，他的父親在那裡的南滿洲鐵道株式會社工作——這段殖民地的童年，如同帝國一般，在1945年劃下句點。他於1954年取得東京大學學位並加入松竹電影公司，在野村芳太郎門下擔任編劇與助理導演，隨後於1961年執導了他的處女作。然後，在1969年，《男人真命苦》（It's Tough Being a Man，1969）問世——這是第一部 Otoko wa Tsurai yo 電影，由渥美清飾演寅次郎，一個心腸軟的巡迴推銷員，在每一集中都墜入愛河又失去愛情。這個系列一直拍到渥美清於1996年逝世，大約四分之一個世紀內共拍了48部電影，並以單一演員主演的最長壽電影系列保持了金氏世界紀錄。西方很晚才跟上腳步，直到武士三部曲——《黃昏的清兵衛》（The Twilight Samurai，2002）、《隱劍鬼爪》（The Hidden Blade，2004）與《武士的責任》（Love and Honor，2006）——問世；《黃昏的清兵衛》獲得了奧斯卡最佳外語片提名。
